Mary Freeby, 85, a native and lifetime resident of Gallup, NM, died April 29, 2003 in Albuquerque. She was born on January 21, 1918 in Gallup. She is survived by her husband, Cecil of Albuquerque; sons, Robert of Tacoma, WA, Richard of Albuquerque, Roger of Denver, CO; four grandsons; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Minnie of Albuquerque; nieces, Norma of Belen, Mary of San Antonio, TX, and Rafael of Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her parents, Benedetto and Caterina Catgenova, immigrants from the Canavese region of Piemonte, Italy and longtime Gallup residents. Mrs. Freeby was always proud of her Catholic faith and Italian heritage and was a lifetime parishioner of Sacred Heart Cathedral in Gallup. She had been an active member of the Catholic Daughters of America, the Legion of Mary and the Third Orders of Saint Francis. She also directed the former Sacred Heart Day School for children of working or single mothers in connection with her parish activities. She was a longtime employee of the City of Gallup, served on the library board, was an active participant at the Senior Citizens' Center, and for many years was a member of the Knitting Club, which included a large number of lifetime friends. They have been of enormous service to a great many New Mexican families. Memorial Rosary will be held Friday, May 2, 2003, 6:00 p.m., at Manor Care Heights, 2216 Lester NE.
