Obituary for Hargett

Emil R. Hargett passed away May 1, 2003 after a surprisingly short illness. He was 84. Born in Russellville, Alabama on November 8, 1918, he was one of six children raised as members of the Church of Christ. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942-46, and attended Yale University's School of Engineering. Returning to Alabama, Mr. Hargett furthered his studies at Auburn University, where he met and married his wife of 53 years, Louise Cherry. The honeymoon couple moved to Boulder, CO for post graduate studies, where they had the first of three children in 1951. Mr. Hargett was a Civil Engineering Professor for over 20 years, teaching at Auburn University, Florida State University, South Dakota State University, Texas A&M University and the University of Colorado. The Hargett family moved to Albuquerque in 1969, where Hargett was employed at the Civil Engineering Research Facility of Sandia Labs. He was a member of the American Society of Civil American Scientists' for breakthrough work with airport runway surfaces and aggregates. Hargett was an avid sportsman, gardener and winemaker, and he finally retired from his last position at the City Engineering Dept. here in Albuquerque. He is survived by his wife, Louise, C. Hargett of Albuquerque; and his three children, Emil F. Hargett of Rio Rancho, Carole E. Pacheco of Savannah, GA, Armand Hargett of Albuquerque; five grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, M. C. Hargett of Russellville, AL; and two sisters, Mary Zirbel of Morrison, CO and Teresa Wallace of Russellville, AL. He will be sorely missed by all who have been touched by his presence, consoled only by the promise, strength and security of his faith. Mr. Hargett will be returned to Alabama and reunited with his family in burial. French Mortuary on Wyoming is in charge of local arrangements.
