Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday August 24, 2003

Melvin Harvey Waldorf , Jr. MD., (13 June 1923 - 11 August 2003). Dr. Waldorf was born in Oklahoma and raised in Oklahoma, California, and Kansas. Upon graduating from Wichita East High School, he began pre-med studies at Wichita State University. His education was briefly interrupted when he enlisted in the United States Army during WWII. However, it was the Army's practice at the time to send all pre-med students to Yale University in Stanford, Connecticut, where Dr. Waldorf completed the coursework necessary to begin medical school at the University of Kansas in 1944. He completed his Doctorate of Medicine in 1947 and he, along with his future partner, J.R. Bradley, MD, took internship and residency at the Later Day Saints Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. Following training the two started a Family Practice clinic in Greensburg in December 1949, and shortly thereafter became the staff physicians at the Kiowa County Memorial Hospital. Dr. Waldorf retired from practice in May of 1991. He practiced medicine continuously in the Greensburg community with the exception of 1943-1945 when he was called into service by the United States Air Force during the Korean war and served at a base in Big Springs, Texas. Dr. Waldorf married the former Mary Virginia Pierce on December 21, 1947, in Fayetteville, AR. Together they raised three children, Pam Pitchford and Ann Waldorf of Albuquerque, NM and Jim Waldorf of St. Augustine, FL. Dr. Waldorf was an active memeber of the Greensburg community where he belonged to and served in various capacities in the Rotary Club, the Masons, the Greensburg United Methodist church, the Greensburg Public School Board of Education and the Iroquois Medical Society. Dr. Waldorf is survived by many friends, family and pets, including his wife, Virginia, of Mesa, AZ; his sister, Carol Waldorf of Rayville, MO; his three children and their families, including six grandchildren, Jenny, Tyler, Paige, Adam, Fritz, and Binh. A Memorial Service is scheduled for Sunday, August 31, 2003, at the Greensburg United Methodist Church at 3:00 p.m. The family is requesting memorials be sent to either Kiowa County Memorial Hospital or the Kiowa County Medical Foundation.
