Obituary for Fazal

Barbara K. Fazal, age 59, died unexpectedly on Monday, August 18, 2003, in Albuquerque. The cause of death was heart failure due to heat exhaustion and dehydration. Barbara was a resident of Los Alamos and Albuquerque for many years. During her life she also lived in the Boston area and in London, England. Barbara was born on October 5, 1943, in West Lafayette, Indiana. She was the oldest of three children of John and Elizabeth Orndoff of Los Alamos. Barbara's family lived in Indiana for several years before moving to Los Alamos in 1946 where her father was employed as a physicist at the Laboratory. Barbara attended Mesa Elementary School, Pueblo Jr. High School and Los Alamos High School where she graduated in l961. She attended the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she studied foreign languages specializing in Russian. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in l966. Her first job was translating documents for the Harvard Peabody Museum Library in Cambridge, MA. It was in Cambridge where Barbara met her husband, Nasir Fazal, a graduate student at Harvard. The couple was married in 1968 and made their home in Natick, MA. They lived in Natick for a period of five years where they had two daughters, Saika and Ferzana. A third child, Shibli, a boy, was born in London, England in l976. In 1976 Barbara and the children moved to New Mexico. She enrolled in the Women in Science program at the University of New Mexico, Los Alamos, where she earned her AA degree in computer science. In 1994, she took a job with the State of New Mexico, Department of Labor, where she was employed until her untimely death. She is survived by her parents; brothers, David Orndoff of Helena, Montana, and Rick Orndoff of Ponder, Texas; husband, Nasir Fazal of Boston, MA; her three children, Saika, Ferzana and Shibli; nephews, Sirus, Sky and Rebazar; as well as her dear friends. Barbara was a devoted mother, and a very kind and trusting person who was always willing to help others. She was a truly unique individual who was liked by everyone and will be greatly missed by her family, friends and coworkers. Barbara enriched the lives of all those who knew her, and she will live on forever in their memories. The Memorial Service celebrating her life was held at The United Church of Los Alamos on Friday, August 29, 2003.The cremains were interred at Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos.
