Obituary for HINO

HINO, PETER JOSEPH Peter Joseph Hino, Colonel US Army retired, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2015. He was born on July 29, 1927 in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania to Peter and Veronica Hino. He grew up in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania. Pete, as he was known to his friends, graduated from Mahanoy City High School at the age of sixteen and joined the Merchant Marine as a Radio Officer. In the fall of 1945 he joined the Navy and entered Submarine School. He was assigned to Pearl Harbor aboard the USS Blackfin in the forward torpedo room and then later served aboard the USS Sealion II. He received an honorable discharge from the Navy in August 1949. Pete then entered the College of William and Mary and was active in the ROTC and was president of his fraternity Theta Delta Chi. Summers working in the coal mines further fueled his desire for an education. He graduated in 1953 and received an appointment to the Regular Army Field Artillery. During an assignment at Fort Sill, Oklahoma he met the love of his life Margaret "Peggy" Calvert Donnelly. They were married October 4, 1958 at Fort Meyer Virginia. During his career in the Army he had two tours of duty to Korea and one to Viet Nam. He attended the United States Army War College and during that time earned a Masters Degree at Dickinson College. He had a distinguished service record and rose to the rank of full Colonel, culminating as Commander of the 25th Division Artillery at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. Pete retired from the Army in 1975. He was awarded numerous decorations and awards including the Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Bronze Star Medal with a "V" for Heroism and three Oak Leaf Clusters. He retired to Albuquerque, New Mexico and had a second career in commercial real estate. He and Peggy resided in Albuquerque for twenty eight years. Twelve years ago they decided to move to Dallas to be closer to their grandchildren. He was always one to share a story, tell a joke, perform a magic trick, stump you with a riddle or amaze you with by his astonishing memory. He will be missed. Pete Hino is survived by his wife of fifty six years, Peggy; his son Peter D. Hino and wife Barenda; grandchildren Preston and Dorothy; his brother Edward; and sister Terri. He was preceded in death by their daughter Dorothy Calvert who died at the age of two and a half. He will have a service with military honors at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. New Mexico.
