Obituary for HELLWIG

HELLWIG, FRANK S. Age 91, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2015. Frank was born on February 26, 1923 in De Soto, Missouri to Eugene and Mary (Harper) Hellwig who have both preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Shirley E. Elliott-Hellwig; brothers, Victor Hellwig, Edward Hellwig, Eugene Hellwig, Bill Hellwig, Charlie Hellwig, Joe Hellwig, Raymond Hellwig and James Hellwig and his sister, Sister Corina Hellwig. He was a graduate of De Soto High School in De Soto, Missouri and served in the United States Army and was a Veteran of World War II. He served at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He later became active in the World War II Red Hat Group and spent the past 20 plus years traveling from city to city each year. He retired in 1980 from the U.S. Department of Forest Service after many years of service. He also served on the Forest Service Retirement Committee (NARFE) and was secretary and treasurer for many years. He was a very active member of Sangre De Cristo Catholic Church in Albuquerque and spent many years working under St. Vincent De Paul helping many people in need. He also served in church youth groups and (RICA) Right of Christian Initiation. He and his wife, Shirley took in many international students from France, Spain and Ireland. During the Cuban Revolution, they took in many Cuban refugees and had seven foster children which many are still a part of the families' lives. Frank was a world traveler and loved joking around and flirting. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed. Frank is survived by his son, David Hellwig; daughter, Dr. Beth Hellwig; son, Keith Hellwig; daughter, Karen Hankinson; daughter, Mary Barber; daughter-in-law, Sue Hellwig; son-in-law, Bob Hankinson; son-in-law, Mike Barber; brother-in-law, Edward Elliott; sister-in-law, Bea Hellwig; sister-in-law, Barbara Canali; sister-in-law, Nancy Getsales; grandchildren, David Hellwig, II, Nathan Hellwig, Ryan Olson, Veronica Hellwig, Scott Hellwig, Sarah Olson, Kathleen Hankinson, Bobby Hankinson and Tommy Barber; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Sangre De Cristo Catholic Church located at 8901 Candelaria Rd NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico on Thursday, February 26, 2015. A Rosary will be said starting at 10:30 a.m. and a Funeral Mass will be said at 11:30 p.m. with a reception to follow in the Parrish Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Sangre De Cristo for the Ministry of the Needy group.
