Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday January 18, 2015

CONDES, CATHERINE JOHANNA Catherine Johanna "Joanne" Condes, age 62, passed away on 6 January, 2015 from complications of multiple myeloma. She was born 6 April, 1952 in Gallup, NM. Her parents, Dolores Saavedra and Tranquilino Padilla, were engaged in various business enterprises, and moved frequently. Their travels took them to southern California, where, in 1970, Joanne graduated from Newport Harbor High School. She worked in the family valet service, and helped manage city parking space. Soon, the family moved to Hawaii, where they operated a restaurant food supply business. Joanne married Vitaliano Condes, and they bore three lovely children, all of whom live in Albuquerque. Joanne had a natural talent and vocation to care for special needs people. During her years in Albuquerque she cared for many foster children in her home. She had a great rapport with children, and worked for several years as an elementary school teacher aide. She loved holidays, especially Christmas and Halloween, when she was known for wearing colorful costumes to work. At age 53 Joanne learned to ride a motorcycle, and toured the western states with friends. In her last ten working years, she was a clerk and Mail Handler at the U.S. Postal Service in both Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Her grandchildren began arriving at the same time her cancer appeared. She fought bravely through five years of chemotherapy, to have every day she could with them. Joanne lived to see seven sons born to her children. She is survived by her husband, Patrick Casey; her father, Tranquilino; brother Robert, sisters Andrea, of Albuquerque, Linda, of Parker, CO, and brother Danny, of Show Low, AZ, and their families; and by her children, Paul, Julia, and Joseph and their families. Joanne's grandchildren, Freddie, Jayen, Bryce, Joseph Jr, Josiah, Gabriel and Ezrayel, will never forget Grandma. Neither will anyone else who knew her. Her remains will be interred in the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. A Rosary is set for 19 January 2015, to begin at 10:30 am at San Martin de Porres Parish, followed immediately by Mass. Lunch will be served at her home. All are welcome.
