Obituary for KOONS

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday January 04, 2015

KOONS, BARBARA ELISE NOLTING died peacefully on Friday, December 26th, 2014 with her family and friends at her side. She had a very long and purposeful life filled with world travel, family, friendship and accomplishment. She was born on January 5th, 1924 to Dr. Daniel P. Nolting and his lovely wife Nell Nolting. She was privileged to be a student of the Sandia Preparatory School which she attended with her lifelong friends, Ann Simms Clark and Patty Hannett Hueter. She remained close to her friends for the duration of her life and was known for her wonderful sense of humor and wit. Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Thoroas Anthony Koons, a well respected physician. For over thirty years Barbara was a counselor for Albuquerque public Schools and devoted her time to Lincoln Middle School and later to Sandia High School where she leaves behind her friends Billie and Cathy. Barbara was a unique spirit and was very generous to many causes. A graduate of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts she was also a graduate of the University of New Mexico. She was very well educated and insisted that her children and grandchildren understood the importance of higher education. Barbara was determined that her children were to be well spoken and she corrected them gently at every opportunity. She is survived by her loving children, Ashton Koons, Thomas Koons and Kirsten Koons Rehorn and husband Scott. She is also survived by her accomplished grandchildren, Liliana, Karenna and Alexei Rehorn. In addition to her children who cared for her to the end, special thanks are owed to her friends and neighbors Ruth, Jim and Gidget, Stephanie, Bo, Mariel Josie and Ann. Barbara led a full and joyous life and specifically requested that no memorial services be held for her and that no tears be shed on her behalf. She held a personal philosophy that every person be treated fairly and that they be given an opportunity to succeed in life. With that, we bid her farewell and thank her for her contributions to us through her knowledge and sense of humor. Rest in Peace, Mom!
