Obituary for AIRMET

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday December 07, 2014

AIRMET, NORMA GROVER Mrs. Norma Airmet, 97, a resident of Albuquerque since 1958, died peacefully of age-related causes on Wednesday, November 26. Norma was born on April 9, 1917, to George F. and Mary Vilate Clayton Grover in Garland, Utah. She was raised by her loving older brothers (Wayne, George and Keith Grover, deceased) after their mother's early death. She married Elliot Seaton Airmet Jr. (deceased) on November 7, 1941 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They moved to Washington, DC where Norma worked for the IRS while Elliot served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Following the war, Elliot's service led them to Dayton, Ohio; Ft. Walton Beach, Florida; Chicago, Illinois; and, finally, Albuquerque. Norma is survived by her four loving children: Barbara Jacob (Bob Carlson) of Albuquerque, Beverly Randall (Stan) of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Douglas (Donelle) of Pocatello, Idaho, and Wayne (Katherine) of Layton, Utah. She also has 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly. Norma was a tireless wife, mother, and member of the Albuquerque community. She worked in the PTA all the years her children were in school, eventually serving as President of the New Mexico PTA from 1969 to 1971. Norma was active in the Retired Officers' Wives' Club and Cosmopolitan Women's Club, volunteering and serving in many capacities, including as president for the CWC. Beginning with lessons as a child, Norma loved to dance. In 1986, she learned about line dancing at the senior centers and quickly joined what would become a favorite activity. She danced and performed with the Rockin' Rhythm Line Dancers into her 90s. In addition to dancing, Norma loved to read, travel, play bridge (and win!), cross-stitch, watch college basketball, and write letters to her family and wide circle of friends. She loved to talk, share stories, and write. She penned her life story, and that of her husband, so that future generations could know their roots. She was also a frequent contributor to the Apple Barrel, a newsletter published by Manzano Del Sol, where she lived the last 4 years of her life. To the end, Norma kept up with all the children and grandchildren. She and Elliot attended all the graduations and weddings and visited new babies as soon as possible. She never missed sending a card for birthdays or anniversaries, despite the large size of her extended family. She loved God and was always grateful for His many blessings. She was active in the Mormon church as a Primary teacher for young children and visited weekly with friends from the Church up until the end. Norma loved life and "hit the floor dancing" every day, despite several health challenges in recent years. Norma will be remembered for her endless goodwill, humor, happiness, and perseverance (water-skiing at 80 years old). She was a positive role model for everyone around her, as evidenced by the outpouring of love and good wishes during her final days. Cremation has taken place. In order for all the great grandchildren to attend, a memorial and celebration of her life will take place in early summer at the LDS Church she attended.
