BROWN, ESCAL EUGENE Funeral services for Escal Eugene Brown, age 96, of Hanceville, will be held on Friday, September 12, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hanceville Funeral Home Chapel with interment in the Hopewell Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Hanceville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He passed away on Friday, September 5, 2014 in St. Augustine, FL. He was a decorated US Army soldier in the Philippines during WW II. Thereafter, he was a superintendent of building construction in New Mexico and throughout the southwest. After retirement, he lived in Cullman and in St. Augustine, FL. Escal's parents were Samuel and Venus Duke Brown. He was predeceased by five siblings. He is survived by three sisters. He married Evola Nicey York of Hanceville, who was his sweetheart still, after 71 years. She has suffered the devastating effects of Alzheimer's disease for the past 12 years. Escal managed her care, lovingly, in their home, until his death. He said he had a contract with God to take care of her as long as God gave him the strength. This he has done admirably. Escal was a good and faithful servant to God and to his church throughout his life, holding office as deacon and teacher in most of the churches of which he was a member. He and Evola had lasting friendships all over the country, and from every church in which they worshiped. He is survived by three children to whom Escal taught love, strength, faithfulness, integrity, courage, and grace; Kay Benson (Charles Justice), Janice Graubard, and Steven York Brown (Heloisa). He has six grandchildren, and ten great-randchildren who also survive him. We miss you, Daddy. You taught us the meaning of love. You are so loved in return.
