Obituary for FLAHERTY

FLAHERTY, EDITH LAURETTE DUVEN passed away at the age of 90 on the morning of March 25th, 2014, at home after a brief illness. She is survived by her two sons, Paul and his wife Diane, and David and his wife Joanne. She is also survived by her grandson Sean Flaherty and her older brother Robert Duven. After graduation from high school in WWII, Edith worked for the Rationing Board in the Rockland Town office till the end of the war. She married Joseph Edward Flaherty, a Chief in the U.S. Submarine Navy in 1946, and the two were happily married until Joseph's death in 1998. Edith spent some years working for the government at the Underwater Sound Lab in New London, Connecticut. She joined the Eastern Star in Connecticut, and remained active in the organization when in New Mexico. She began writing in 1976, and would eventually publish seven books, including her award winning Home Before Dark, an autobiography of growing up in the depression. She and Joseph moved to Albuquerque in 1978, and she founded a writers group which is still active today, and has helped its members publish several books. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 29th, 2014 at 10:00AM at Bethlehem Lodge #56 in Belen, New Mexico.
