Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday March 09, 2014

WHITMORE, PERCY L. Percy L. Whitmore, 87, resident of Los Alamos since 1949, passed away February 27, 2014 with his children at his side. Born in Manhatten, KS September 19, 1926, he was raised in the area until his service in the US Army as PFC marksman in the Pacific. He returned to Kansas to marry Phyllis Maxine Chilcote and together they moved to New Mexico in 1949. With the promise of a good job they arrived in Totavi and later to the "Hill" where their kids were born and raised. Percy worked for Zia Co. and continued his education becoming a journeyman electrician with Local 611. As the labs changed so the trades followed and he continued working until retirement. In his younger years he was an avid HAM radio builder and operator at the old North Mesa site. He also hunted and camped, square-danced, loved the Elks and American Legion as a long-time member. He walked many miles through Los Alamos and so many people knew him by sight. He later contracted as a lightning specialist as Whitmore Lightning Protection. He met a new generation at the labs then. Around town he was always stopped by those who knew him through work or socializing. He is survived by his son Terry Whitmore and wife Crystal Riddle; daughter, Peggy Hollingsworth and husband Larry; his grandchildren, Paul and Tarah; two great- grandchildren, Bryce and Megan Hollingsworth; several nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Mary (Edulblute); his brothers, Ivan of Los Alamos and Merle of Blue Rapids, KS. After the many years in Los Alamos he was truly home. He leaves behind friends and 3 special people, Alfred, Joe, and Marty. Many thanks to the doctors, the ER and ICU staff and caseworkers at LAMC. In Albuquerque, thanks to Home Sweet Home staff at Roma, Klarus Home Care and Gentiva Hospice. Private internment services for the family will be held at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
