Obituary for KNIGHT

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday December 08, 2013

KNIGHT, DORIS Age 90 years old, a resident of Albuquerque for over 25 years, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 2, 2013 after suffering a stroke. She was born in 1923 in New Effington, SD to Orlie and Velma Holland. Doris was the second oldest of six children. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter Knight, who was the love of her life; and one brother, Orlie Holland, Jr. Doris is survived by four sisters, Mae Lovelace, Lois Amsden, Janis Banchero and husband, Don, and Joan Jacoby and husband, Bill; and many nieces and nephews. Although Doris never had children of her own, she was very close to her many nieces and nephews. Doris grew up during the Depression and World War II. She graduated valedictorian of her high school class. After graduation, she, like so many young girls, worked at jobs normally held by men, who were off fighting in the war. She went to Washington DC and trained as a "computer operator." Doris was a long time member of Faith Lutheran Church, an active supporter of the Shrine Children's Hospital, Daughters of the Nile, and the Honored Ladies Shriners' Widows Group. She was a fun-loving lady who enjoyed entertaining (especially at Christmas time), and a marvelous cook. She loved to decorate her home, and truly enjoyed having the family over on Christmas day for a wonderful dinner. Cremation has taken place and family graveside services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Doris' memory to the Shriners Hospital for Children, c/o Ballut Abyad Shrine, 6600 Zuni SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108.
