Obituary for TORRES

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday November 24, 2013

TORRES, ARTHUR F. Retired Army Major Arthur F. Torres, 67, of Rio Rancho, NM, passed away on November 19, 2013, after a bout with cancer. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie Torres and father John Torres. Arthur is survived by his wife and soul mate, Katherine Van Goidtsnoven de Torres, as well as his three sons, Ty Torres, Beau Torres and Andrew Krosche. He leaves behind three grandchildren, Coltrane, Layla and Hendrix Torres. Arthur was a graduate of The United States Military Academy at West Point and served multiple tours in Vietnam as an Airborne Ranger. He served as the Editor of the Military Review in Ft. Leavenworth, KS, and was the Public Affairs Officer for the United States Southern Command, Ft. Clayton, Panama. In 20 plus years of service, Arthur received numerous awards and decorations including the Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, Army Commendation Medal with V Device, Gallantry Cross with Palm Citation and the Meritorious Service Medal. Arthur was blessed with a loving family and a broad extended family, many of whom looked to him as a father figure. He spent years coaching sports, driving kids to the beach, giving learned advice, tending wounds of the body & soul & perhaps most importantly, listening when there were no words to be spoken. While he served his country gallantly and created a legend amongst his friends and family, Arthur is probably best known as a quick-witted, no-nonsense secondary school teacher. In an international teaching career that led him through Kuwait, Pakistan, Thailand, Venezuela, Taiwan and Tunisia, Arthur instilled a sense of achievement and responsibility in his students through a combination of tough-love, common sense and an acute understanding of our collective humanity. His rapier wit and indelible friendship will be missed by all. A Rosary will be recited Monday, November 25, 2013 at 7:00 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 309 Stover Ave SW, Albuquerque, NM. A Mass will be held Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment to follow at 1:30 PM at Santa Fe National Cemetery, 501 N Guadalupe St, Santa Fe, NM.
