Obituary for ELKINS

ELKINS, HOLLIS PH.D. After a two year battle with pancreatic cancer, Dr. Elkins passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at 7:57 a.m. at her home surrounded by loving family. Dr. Elkins was the daughter of the late E.F. (Bud) Elkins and Marjorie (Nelson) Elkins, born in Watertown, SD, on May 28, 1945 and moved to Clark, SD, in 1953. She graduated from Clark High School in 1963, completed her Undergraduate Degree with honors from Augustina College in Sioux Falls, SD; received her Master's Degree from NM State University in Las Cruces, NM, in 1969; and her PH.D. from the University of NM in 1977, where she taught for several years. Dr. Elkins was a dedicated teacher who taught at Rio Grande High School for 32 years and at TVI (CNM) for 10 years, until retiring in 2007. After retiring she continued her teaching through the Advanced Placement and College Board throughout the country. She was a longtime runner. She had participated in the Duke City Marathon for the past 20 years. She also competed in the myriad of races including several full marathons, hundreds of 5k and 10k races. Dr. Elkins was an avid sports fan, especially fond of the St. Louis Cardinals and traveled to many of their games. She was the first statistician for the UNM Women's Lobo Basketball team at Johnson Gym in the 1970's. Dr. Elkins was a creative writer, poet and artist. She is survived by her mother, Marjorie Elkins of Watertown, SD; sisters, Cindy Wika and husband, Glenn of Sioux Falls, SD, and Elyse Elkins of Rio Rancho; brother, Ed Elkins of Sioux Falls, SD; longtime partner, Jude DeMoss of Rio Rancho; beloved niece, Natalie Frazier, who assisted her aunt during her long-term illness; many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 30, 2013, 10:00 a.m., at FRENCH - Westside.
