Obituary for OTERO

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday June 23, 2013

OTERO, MAX JR. 1924-2013 Max Otero Jr. age 88, a resident of Albuquerque, went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 17, 2013. He was born July 9, 1924, in Las Vegas, NM to Ursula (Garduno) and Max Otero. He was the cherished brother to Mark (deceased), Rosemary, Joseph (deceased), Danny and Elizabeth. Max graduated from St. Mary's High School in Colorado Springs, CO and a week later was inducted into the US Armed Forces in 1943. He served his country during World War II, and experienced first-hand the highs and lows of this war. He was part of the 288th Field Artillery, Observation Battalion, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge, the crossing of the Siegfried Line, and helped to liberate a concentration camp in Nuremburg, Germany. He earned several medals, including The American Service Medal, European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Upon his discharge and return to NM, he enrolled at Highlands University and consequently met the love of his life, Flora Maese. They were married, moved to Albuquerque, and together raised their five children. Max was a man of many talents; he was instrumental in the construction of I-40 through Albuquerque, was a paint and body man for many years with Quality Pontiac, and continued to help others even after his retirement in the late 80's. We will always remember Max (Grandpa, Dad, Uncle) as a man of quiet dignity and courage. His many stories will continue to bring a smile to our faces for generations to come. He wasn't a rich, powerful or famous man, but he was kind-hearted generous and brave. He taught us to live an abundant life with what we are given, and make the most of what we have. His legacy of love will continue on through his children, 14 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Max was preceded in death by his beloved wife Flora in 2001. He is survived by his sons Michael (Kathe), and Robert (Gloria), daughters Suzanne Cordova (Roger), Dianna Cuaron and Helen Quintana. He will be forever in the hearts of his grandchildren Geneva, Joseph, Julia, Alicia, Sally, Aaron, Jeremy, Evangelina, Nathaniel, Steven, Avaristo, Angelica, A.J., Chrysten and great-grandchildren Armando, Ava, Emiliano and Alex.
