Obituary for JARAMILLO

JARAMILLO, SERAPIO L. Age 64, died unexpectedly on 4-24-13 at his home in Albuquerque, NM. Serapio was born in 1949 in Duran, NM to Ida and Filomeno Jaramillo. He was one of nine siblings and attended John Adams Middle School and Rio Grande High School. After high school he and his best friend Jack Fullerton toured the country before enlisting in the military. Serapio served in the US Army from 1969 until his honorable discharge in 1975. During his service he was at the front line in Viet Nam as a radio specialist and earned two Medals of Commendation. After the Army he attended the Adlai Stevenson College of the University of California Santa Cruz, earning a BA in Economics. He then attended University of Wisconsin Law School graduating in 1976 after which he returned to New Mexico and practiced law primarily in Albuquerque from 1976 until his retirement in 2009. In addition to solo practice and a four year practice in Farmington, NM with his wife, Serapio worked at a number of legal agencies including the Office of the Attorney General (under two Attorney Generals), the 2nd and 11th Judicial District Attorneys Offices, City of Albuquerque Legal Div and the NM Office of the Public Defender where he was appointed and served as the first District Defender for Las Cruces, NM. Serapio is survived by his wife of 25 years, The Honorable Judge Victoria J. Grant (retired); his son, Eli P. Jaramillo, who was the light of his father's life; siblings: Joe Eddie Lopez (Rosie) of Phoenix, AZ, Esther Bess (Rondy) of Martinsville, IN, Sylvia Coleman, Charlene Rice (Roberto) and Loretta Lewis, all of Albuquerque, and Christine Singleton (Frank) of Chandler, AZ; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. A service will be held on 5/1/13 at the church in Duran, NM with Rosary at 9:00 am; Mass at 10:00 am; and burial to follow next to his mother at the Duran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Viet Nam Veterans Assn or the NM Humane Assn. Flowers may be sent to: 2321 Ada Pl. NE, Albuquerque, 87106.
