Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday April 05, 2013

THOMPSON, GENEVIEVE MOLLANDS Age 95, a lifelong resident of New Mexico, died Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, J. Leon Thompson. She is survived by her two daughters, Beverly Cramer, widow of the late Ray Cramer of Albuquerque and Sandra Thompson, wife of William Thompson of Albuquerque. She is also survived by five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. After graduating from the University of New Mexico in 1938, she married Leon and started a family. Although the focus of Ginger's life was her family, she found great satisfaction in serving the community. The highlight of Ginger's public service was serving as President of the Presbyterian Hospital Auxiliary. Being the visionary that she was, she saw the need to inform the public on specific health related issues and was the leader in the founding of TEL-MED. TEL-MED was the first medical education program accessible by phone, utilizing a Voice Response Unit in the State of New Mexico. This program served tens of thousands of people on an annual basis. Ginger was applauded for her accomplishments for this most innovative medical initiative. Ginger was President of the Junior League of Albuquerque for two terms. She was President of the Albuquerque Alumnae Association of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Ginger served as advisor to the Albuquerque Youth Council. Ginger was also instrumental in the founding of the Donita program which grew to become the NM Symphony Guild's Senioritas program. As a member of the NM Symphony Board she held numerous positions including Symphony Ball Chairman. She was an active board member of The American Red Cross, Girl Scouts of America and many other organizations which she held close to her heart. Ginger and Leon were members of the First Presbyterian Church. They were also active members of the Albuquerque Country Club where she served as President of the Women's Golf Association. She was twice Chairman of the major golf tournaments. Ginger led an extremely fulfilling and honorable life. A life that was filled with wonderful friends with whom she and her husband traveled the world. But above all, her true passion was her husband and her family. Her love for a good story, well told; a good drink, well served; and good company, well informed - made her a companion of young and old alike. We will all miss her beyond expression. May God rest her soul on the fairways of heaven. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, April 6, 2013, 11:30 at the First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust NE. A reception will follow at the Albuquerque Country Club. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Albuquerque Community Foundation.
