Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday February 24, 2013

CHAVEZ, EDWARD E. JR. 83, a resident of Vanadium, New Mexico, passed away on February 22, 2013. He is preceded in death by his father, Edward E. Chavez; his mother, Helen Terrazas Chavez Theis; his brother, Benjamin Chavez; his grandson, Jeff Kennon; and his great-grandson, Eryx Mai. He is survived by his wife, Lucy Chavez; his son, Richard Chavez; his daughters, Edwina Gardner, Christina Kennon, Stephanie Lopez and her husband Gerardo Lopez, his sister, Margaret Agretelis; his brothers, Reginald Chavez and his wife Lucille and David Chavez and his wife Teresa; his grandchildren, Elena, Adron, Erik, Nicole, Richard Michael, Eddie Joe, Leah, and Lucia; his great-grandsons, Jake and John; and many nieces and nephews. Eddie was born March 4, 1929 in Silver City, New Mexico. Eddie was a hard-worker and provider from an early age. From the time that he delivered newspapers on his roller skates in Ft. Bayard to his years of service in the United States Navy to his four decades of service in the mines, he demonstrated tenacity, strength and dedication to any job or task he encountered. He was known for his strength of will, loyalty and ingenuity. Perhaps his greatest achievements came in his role as a family man. His titles were son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle; but his roles were that of provider, friend, protector, teacher, dreamer, chemist, scientist, engineer, nursemaid, dressmaker, dancer, mechanic, storyteller and general super hero. He was generous to a fault and anyone who knew him need not go without food, shelter or be lonely. Services will be held on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 340 Mayo Street in Bayard, NM. Internment will follow at Ft. Bayard National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Life Quest, 907 N Pope St, Silver City, NM 88061.
