Obituary for FLOURNOY

FLOURNOY, ALICE F. Age 88, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday morning, January 28, 2013. Alice was born in Amarillo, Texas on March 12, 1924 to Herman Joseph Metzler of Madison, Indiana and Charlotte Elizabeth (O') Shaughnessy of Portage, Wisconsin. She grew up on a cattle ranch in the White Mountains of Arizona near Springerville. At age 12, she moved back to Amarillo for a several years. She then moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she attended and graduated from Albuquerque High School and later earned a BA (in less than four years) from the University of New Mexico in 1945. While director of the Girl Scouts of America in Albuquerque, she met and wed Eldridge David Flournoy (born July 4, 1922 in Falfurrias, Texas) on April 10, 1950. In 1976, the majority of the family moved to San Diego, California. Alice devoted her life to loving and supporting her husband and to raising her eight children. "Along with our father, she taught us the importance of a good education, a good book, hard work, strong principles, the love of the outdoors, and faith in God." She was fun loving and adventurous, and if she had the resources, would have traveled all over the world. She will be dearly missed. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Eldridge David Flournoy, her brother Frank Metzler, and her sister Katherine Millard. She is survived by her brother Charles Metzler and his wife, Catherine; her children, Elizabeth, and spouse Declan Rieb; Kathleen, and spouse Robert Fargo; David, and spouse Jamie; Mary Ann, and spouse Larry Rosenthal; Virginia, and spouse Duane Green; Frank, and spouse Georgia; Margaret, and spouse, Daren Caltagirone; Mark, and spouse Shin. She is also survived by her 23 grandchildren: Sean, Brian, Jesse, Nathan, Kevin, Jason, Alicia, David, Colin, Danielle, Jackie Ann, Jennifer, Megan, Jonathan, Ryan, Christopher, Alexandra, Nicholas, Vincent, Connor, Trevor, Alec, and Ashley, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. The Rosary and the Mass of the Resurrection were celebrated on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 10:30 am at St. Therese Catholic Church, San, Diego, Ca. She was interned next to her beloved husband at Holy Cross Cemetery, San Diego, CA.
