Obituary for ORR

ORR, HAZEL HARLEY age 91, local artist and longtime resident of Albuquerque, and previously of Las Cruces, died peacefully on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 after a short illness. Her daughter, Julie, was at her side. Hazel was born on April 22, 1921 in Fairmont, Minnesota, the fifth, of six children to William Perry Harley and Theresa (Struck) Harley. After high school, she studied art at the University of Minnesota. During WWII she moved to California to work. There she met and married, William James Orr, who was serving as a lieutenant in the US Army. After the war they settled in Las Cruces where he taught history at NMSU until his death in 1973. She completed her college education at NMSU and subsequently taught elementary school and art workshops for teachers in Las Cruces. In 1985, at retirement, she moved to Albuquerque to pursue full time, her lifelong love of art. At that time she was able to travel widely and studied art in Italy and Spain. Hazel was a signature member of the New Mexico Watercolor Society, and received awards from the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, NM Watercolor Society, and Artist's Magazine. She was a member of the Yucca Gallery in Old Town, and had work on display at Occasions Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona. Her art has been on display at a variety of juried shows throughout the state; Albuquerque, Los Alamos, Las Cruces, and Placitas. Her love of life and learning, kindness, wisdom and her Inspiration to other artists will be greatly missed. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, William James Orr and her son, William James Orr Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Julie Orr of Seattle; sister, Gail Jorgenson of Los Angeles; daughter-in-law, Ana Eva Cardenas of Guadalajara; her daughters partner, Susanna Smith as well as various nieces, nephews and friends who loved and will miss her. A Memorial Service to commemorate her life and art, will be held at Manzano Del Sol Good Samaritan Village, 5201 Roma Ave. NE. on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at 2:00pm.
