Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday February 03, 2013

HOLMES, MARJORIE (nee Marjorie Violet Stone) died unexpectedly but peacefully on January 26th. She was born in Duluth, Minnesota to Marjorie Claire (Wade) and Clarence Verne Stone on November 29, 1921 and grew up in Eureka, Colorado (now a ghost town) and Denver. Marjorie enjoyed a life filled with activity. While raising children, she was a recreation director in Great Falls, Montana and later Albuquerque. Later, she worked at Lytle Corp and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Unable to attend college in her younger days, she did so later and earned a degree in accounting from UNM at age 54; then worked until her retirement as an auditor for the USDA. After retirement, she became very active in Senior Olympics, and earned large numbers of ribbons, medals, and trophies, especially in race-walking, javelin, and shotput. She won the gold medal in two race-walking events in the national Senior Olympics in Baton Rouge. She was also active in officiating at many Albuquerque-area track and field events, and was just re-certified to do more. Marjorie was a music lover, and a very loyal audience member in local chamber music concerts, especially Sunday Chatter (formerly Church of Beethoven) which she attended almost every Sunday. Other regular activities included a walking group, a philosophy discussion group, airport shuttle driving, ham radio (KA5TAQ), working at the elections center, courses at UNM, and many other things. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Wade and William Stone; her husbands Clarence Lenth and Robert Holmes; her daughter Marilyn Goodrich; and grandson John Wills. She is survived by daughter Martha Wills (Walter Stiles) of San Antonio, Texas; son Russell Lenth (Jane DeWitt) of Iowa City, Iowa; son-in-law Donald Goodrich of Albuquerque; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Memorials should be directed to Sunday Chatter or National Senior Games Association. A memorial observance will take place in the spring.
