GILBERT, DELILA MAE November 15, 1910 -January 1, 2013 Born in Lamar Colorado, to Maurice E. Gilbert and Fernette A. Van Patten Gilbert moved often since Maurice had a railroad construction company (Gilbert Brothers) and moved often with Fernette serving as the camp nurse. Mae spent her formative years in Douglas, Wyoming, then later to Plainview Texas, where Mae graduated from High School in 1928. The family moved to Albuquerque in the early 1930's and Mae earned her Bachelor's of Arts degree in 1938 from the University of New Mexico as well. She began teaching in Hatch, NM and subsequently moved to Portales, NM where she taught High School English until her retirement in the early 1980's. Mae kept in touch with many of her former students from Portales High School over the years which was very satisfying for her after retirement. For many years she was a resident of St. Catherine's Healthcare and recently she was attended by Amber Care Hospice. Mae's passing was preceded by her parents, Maurice E. and Fernette A. Gilbert; brother, Myndert Gilbert; sisters, Fernette Honaker and Winifred Jay. A number of nieces and nephews remain, Van H.Gilbert, Gary and Steve Jay, Jessica and Roberta Honaker, Crystal Gray. A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Daniels Family Funeral Services Carlisle Chapel.
