Obituary for GIORGI

GIORGI, ANGELO (AL) L., DR. Age 95, died peacefully at his home in Los Alamos, NM on Tuesday, September 11, 2012. He was born July 18, 1917 in Syracuse, NY to Mattia and Teresa Giorgi. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth M. (Taylor) Giorgi, whom he married in May of 1946. Also surviving are his sons Stephen J. Giorgi and Daniel K. Giorgi and his sister Louise Giorgi. His son Larry D. Giorgi preceded him in death. Angelo was a long time resident of Los Alamos where he lived with his loving wife since arriving in 1946. As a young man, Angelo received a B. S. in Chemistry from Syracuse University and later went on to earn his PhD from the University of New Mexico. His distinguished career with the Los Alamos National Laboratory spanned 35 years where he was a leader in atomic energy projects, high temperature chemistry research and low-temperature super- conductivity research until his retirement in 1987. Upon retirement, he was appointed to a research position at the Darmstadt Institute of the University of Darmstadt, in Darmstadt, Germany and in 1990 he co-authored the Landolt Bornstein series on Numerical Data in Science & Industry vols 21b & 21d. Later, Angelo returned to the Los Alamos National Laboratory as a Research Associate in a consultant capacity from 1988 through 1997. He holds five patents and authored 83 technical publications. Angelo was an active member of the Los Alamos community and proudly served as County Treasurer in 1959 and County Commissioner in 1960. He also served as President of the Los Alamos Toastmasters (1950-1951), Director of the Los Alamos Elks Club (1953 & 1955) and Director of the Los Alamos Retirement Group (1998-1999). Angelo was laid to rest during a small, private ceremony at Guaje Pines Cemetery on Tuesday, September 17, 2012. He was surrounded by his family and will be truly missed.
