Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday August 14, 2012

RICHARD DALE SR. Born June 16, 1927 on the family farm in New Richland, MN and passed August 5, 2012 at home in Albuquerque, NM. Eventful to say the least, Rich lived life fully. He grew up on the farm, having survived getting caught up in the bale thrower at the age of three and nearly drowning in the flooded irrigation ditch on several occasions. He graduated from Medford High School and in 1946, at 18 years old, he joined the Army. He served in the Armored Tank Division 457, stationed in Korea, till he was called home after his father was hurt in a farm accident. He married Gladyce Rishavy of Owatonna, MN and they lived in Wells, MN and raised their three children. They moved to New Mexico in 1966 where he drove truck for Yellow Freight and earned the handle "Palamino" that stayed with him always. He was a member of J.C.'s, Pack Leader for Cub Scouts and active with Campfire Girls, and an avid member of his church. He was a member of American Legion Post 49 for many years and worked in the capacity of security for dances and other functions. There he earned the nickname "Black Bart"! Rich liked to read, loved music, and he said dancing kept him young. He enjoyed gardening and beautiful flowers, loved to work outdoors and enjoyed the open spaces and fresh country air. He traveled many miles across country road-tripping. He liked to get behind the wheel. His favorite activity was bowling where he excelled and competed in many different leagues, as well as with his family, many of whom have that same competitive spirit. He took great pride in his bowling family. Rich began oil painting in his retirement and his vision of what he saw and painted exploded with works of art which he signed with his handle "PALAMINO". Family enjoyed watching him "grow" with each new piece and he made sure to personalize everyone. Rich leaves behind his dear Diana (Herrera), of Cedar Crest, NM; his son Richard Jr. (Julene), CO; his daughter Debra (Greg) Wolfe, CO, and his daughter Rebecca Dougherty (Rick Romero), ABQ. Also his sister Norma Ann (Wayne) Peterson, ABQ; his sister-in-law Mary (Clyde) Rishavy, Owatonna, MN; brother-in-law Roger (Darlene) Rishavy, Rochester, MN; and sister-in-law Bernice (Richard) Mostrom, Ocean City, MD. Rich also leaves nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren with one on the way; nine nieces and nephews and all those greats. He was preceded in this journey by his wife of 49 years, Gladyce; his parents Otto and Minnie (Schjei) Matthies of Ellendale, MN; brother Melvyn of Ft Worth, Texas; and sister Jean (George) Blouin of Ellendale, MN. Rich chose cremation so he can be interred with his family at the Memorial Garden Cemetery in Steele County, MN at a later date. It was also his wish to be buried in New Mexico. Burial will be on Friday, August 31, 2012, at 3:00pm at the Veteran's National Cemetery in Santa Fe. A memorial service will be held in Albuquerque on Saturday, Sept. 1st at the Veteran's Memorial Garden at 5:00pm with an American Legionnaire's military salute, and then friends and family will gather at American Legion Post 49 at 7:00pm to honor and celebrate the life of a wonderful, vibrant, spiritual, and loving man. He left a huge void. He will be missed. God Bless and keep him and his beautiful baby blues! In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
