Obituary for CORDOVA

TOBY A. A lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away on April 21, 2012 at 89 years of age. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Cecilia Cordova; son, Frank Herrera; daughter, Jennie Sanchez; parents, Eulalio and Juanita Cordova; and sisters, Helen Chavez, Frances Jimenez, Dolores Munoz, Josie King and Mary Garcia. He is survived by his daughters Patti Maestas and Tobey Woodall and husband Steven and son Ted Cordova. Other survivors include, siblings, Candie Chavez and husband Perfecto, Flora Otero and husband Albert, Lucy Diaz and Nestor Cordova and wife Doris. He was also a much-loved grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and uncle. Mr. Cordova was born on April 7, 1923, to Eulalio and Juanita Cordova. From an early age, Toby lived life on his own terms, going from one adventure to another. At age ten, he taught himself to swim by crossing the Rio Grande; he later became a professional boxer; rode motorcycles; and worked on the railroad in Utah and California. In his late teens, he joined the Army Air Corps, where he proudly served in WWII's European Theater of Operations with the 467th Bombing Squadron as a radio operator in 34 bombing missions in B-24s and B-17s over France and Germany. His planes were hit several times and he received the Air Medal with five clusters. After his discharge, he studied at UNM and later worked for the U.S. Postal Service. Known for his intelligence, sense of humor, charisma and bright smile, Toby met many life-long friends during his 40-year career. Throughout his life, Mr. Cordova was an avid reader, follower of politics, outdoorsman and friend to all animals. A Rosary will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 24th at French Mortuary on University Blvd. with graveside services at Mt. Calvary Cemetery to follow. Friends may visit beginning at 9:00 am.
