He served in the United States Navy during WWII. Once released from service, he traveled to Michigan to live. Soon after they married, Hugh and Patt built a house with their own two hands for himself and his new bride. Hugh was employed by Harley Davidson during this time. For fun and recreation, Hugh raced Harleys and won several trophies. In the mid 50's, wanting to provide a better life for his family, Hugh went to work for Albuquerque Gravel Products. In 1958, he and Patt adopted their first child, Deborah. In 1960, they were blessed with the adoption of their second child, Mark. Then again in 1965, they adopted their third child, Kelly. During these years, Hugh worked his way up through his company and attained the position of Executive Vice-President of Albuquerque Gravel Products. In 1983, they received custody of their fourth child, Tonya and soon after adopted her. In 1988, Hugh retired and pursued his passion for golf, gardening and spending time with his family. Hugh suffered the loss of his wife in 2002, after 53 years of marriage. He then lost his eldest child, Deborah, in 2005.
