Obituary for TUCKER

MILTON W. Age 91, died March 23, 2012 at La Posada, Mesilla Valley Hospice in Las Cruces, NM. Milton was born on April 7, 1920 in the province of Manitoba Canada to parents Margaret Shannon and Wilbur Tucker. The Tucker family soon returned to Pierpont, SD where Milton grew up and graduated from high school. In 1938 Milton joined the U.S. Navy and became a Pharmacist Mate and Surgical Nurse. When WWII broke out Milton transferred into submarines where he served several combat patrols on the USS Jack and the USS Boarfish. Milton retired from the U.S. Navy in 1958 while serving on the second nuclear submarine, the USS Seawolf. He was a qualified nuclear reactor technician and he was Chief of the Boat. Milton went on to work for Sandia Corporation in Albuquerque, NM as a reactor technician. As part of his job while there he participated in several surface and underground atomic weapons tests. He retired from Sandia Corp. and relocated to Truth Or Consequences, NM where he ran his own real estate and insurance business for several years. Milton was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; wives, Geraldine Gary and Elizabeth Rohde-Matlock. He is survived by his twin daughters, Lana Eckman of Las Cruces, NM and Linda McConkey of Moriarty NM and their husbands; two step-daughters and two step-sons; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters; five brothers; and many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Milton was a remarkable man who considered himself unremarkable in every way. At nine years old he was plowing fields on the family's farm in South Dakota with the team of mules and 30 years later he was serving aboard a nuclear submarine. Milton resided at The Village at Northrise, Hallmark. A memorial service will be held there April 7, 2012 at 2:00 PM to celebrate Milton's life. His ashes will be interred at Sunset Memorial Park and Mausoleum next to Elizabeth, in Albuquerque, NM, April 14, 2012 at 10:00 AM.
