PHILLIP was born in Santa Fe, NM to Tito Gurule and Felipita Montoya on February 26th, 1947. Phillip attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Schools and Santa Fe High School. He received a degree in Social Sciences in 1969 from the College of Santa Fe. He then worked for the State of New Mexico in several positions including social worker for HSD until he was drafted by the Army and served in Vietnam. After his honorable discharge he continued his studies working on a Masters degree in history. Shortly after he went to work for SER Jobs for Progress. He later went to work for the State of New Mexico and served as a Bureau Chief for General Services. Phil then followed his real passion and returned to SER to counsel, educate and encourage students to complete their high school education, then placed them in professions they were suited for. Phil was extremely bright and full of knowledge and always wanted to share it with his students, family, and friends. Phil loved Astronomy and spent a lot of time with his telescope. He also loved the mountains and hiking. Phil is known for his famous red chile. Phil will be missed for all that he has done in his community as well as in his parish, St. John the Baptist. Phillip passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family and is now joined with his mother who recently passed away on March 1, 2012. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years Sylvia Gurule; daughter, Laura Salazar; grandsons, Eric Watkins, Zachary Abeyta, and Jacob Perea; great-grandchildren, Shayla, Serenity, and Xavier Watkins; siblings, Marie Garcia (Carlos), Albert (Tessie), Leo (Missy), Patricia (Henry), Ben (Tommie), Art (Anna) Gurule; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and nephews, as well as other family members and friends who loved and will miss him. Services will be held at St. John the Baptist Parish, 1301 Osage Ave in Santa Fe. A Rosary will be recited on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 7:00pm, with a visitation beginning at 6:00pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 23, 2012 at 9:00 am, with Father Nathan Libaire, Celebrant. Burial will follow at the National Cemetery at 10:30am.
