Obituary for GUERRANT

WILLIAM BARNETT Age 89, died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, February 19, 2012. Mr. Guerrant was born in Danville, KY. He served his country honorably in the US Air Force from 1942 until 1945 as a bomber pilot with the B-26 Marauders in the European Theatre. He attended Austin College in Sherman, TX, graduating in 1946. He earned his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1949. After working a few years as a chemist in industry, he became a Full Professor at Austin College. During his years at Austin College, he was awarded a National Science Foundation grant for 1961-1962. During that period he studied at Imperial College, University of London, under Professor D.H.R. Bardeen. In 1968, he went to Texas Tech University as a Full Professor and taught there until 1984. After retiring from Texas Tech, he served as a volunteer Professor of Chemistry at Tunghai University, Taiwan until 1986 under the auspices of the United Board for Higher Christian Education in Asia. From 1986-1988 he served in the same capacity at Hong Kong Baptist College in Hong Kong. William is survived by his wife, Mary Thorington Guerrant; his son, Will Guerrant and wife, Theresa; and two granddaughters, Stephanie Michelle and Lauren Marie Guerrant.
