Obituary for MARKEL

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday January 17, 2012

DREW DEAN Passed away suddenly on the morning of January 7, 2012. He was 53 years old. Drew was born in Montevideo, MN and was a life-long fan of the Minnesota Vikings. An extremely gifted Chef, Drew attended Mitchell Area Vocational Technical School and graduated with a degree in Culinary Arts in 1978. He owned and operated numerous restaurants throughout the United States including Moe's New York Style Pizzeria, The Bull & Bush, and others. His last project was to open the Black Diamond Grill in Red River, New Mexico with Lane and Jessica Cross. Drew was preceded in death by his father, Howard Dean Markel; his mother Mary Jo Nelson; and his brother Hugh Markel. He is survived by his niece Courtney De La Rosa of Vermillion, South Dakota; his nephew Corey Markel of San Diego, California; his step-son Michael Evans and his wife Natalie and their unborn son of Indiana; his stepdaughter Mandy of Los Chavez; the two loves of his life, Dovel Mc Dole and Annette Otero; as well as his good friend Jim Pawelski; and his Labrador Daisy. So many people were touched by this man. He was witty, gruff and passionate about the restaurant business; always there to lend a hand or teach someone how to prepare a dish. Drew prided himself on perfection and literally worked himself to the grave; making his last act on Earth a five course seafood dinner for his good friend Rob. Drew's wishes were to be cremated and his ashes spread to join those of his brother Hugh. His achievements and his love for all of us in his life will be celebrated at 12:00pm on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at a private residence in Peralta, New Mexico. Further inquiries regarding the memorial can be made to Shannon 505-459-9916. We will all miss you Chef! The world will never be the same now that you are gone.
