Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday January 11, 2012

PHYLLIS ESKEW Peacefully went to see her Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 7, 2012. She is survived by her beloved husband, Wilbur; her sons, Mike Eskew (and wife Patricia), Jim Eskew (and wife Sydnie); three grandchildren, Ashley Hatley, Nikki Brown and Kelly Eskew; two great-grandchildren, Jasmine Celeste Hatley and Viviana Maurine Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was loved and respected by Wilbur's parents, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Martha Heigh of Vancouver, Washington, and her first husband, Gerald Eskew of Oregon. Preceding her in death were her parents, Thelma and Glenn Hazelhurst. Phyllis was born on June 30, 1938 in Eugene, Oregon. She attended Oregon State University, the University of Oregon, and later graduated from the University of Albuquerque. She came to Albuquerque in 1959 with her first husband. She was a devoted mother and foster mother, and known as "Mrs. E." to her sons' numerous friends. Phyllis loved people and had a very active social conscience. She was a church secretary and enjoyed a long career as a legal secretary. In 1972, she became the charter President of the Albuquerque Legal Secretaries Association and was honored as Legal Secretary of the Year. She held numerous positions at both the state and national level. She was a certified Professional Legal Secretary and Certified Legal Assistant. She also loved teaching and taught classes at T-VI (now CNM). Despite her diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis in the 1970's and her increasing lack of mobility, Phyllis never used it as an excuse to do anything other than enjoy life to the fullest. She was active in her church and created many special friendships at Calvary Chapel East Mountain, First Christian Church in Albuquerque and Bible Study Fellowship. She was a very active grandmother taking her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to movies, museums, and creating special memories for them. She met and married Wilbur Stearns and they had 23 blissful years together spent in travel, bird-watching and special conversations with friends and family on their Edgewood veranda. A Memorial service with buffet lunch will be held at Embassy Suites Hotel, 1000 Woodward Place NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Saturday, January 21, 2012, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, in the Sandia Ballroom IV-V.
