Obituary for DABBS

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday January 01, 2012

CARL Passed away on Monday, December 26, 2011. He was born on March 17, 1920 in Alabama, one of seven children. They were orphaned at a young age. Carl kept the family together by working in a CCC camp in California in the late 1930's. Dabbs worked in Alaska on the DEW line and came to NM to work for Western Electric. He met his wife Robbie of almost 50 years in Farmington when both worked for Mountain Bell. Others who survive Carl are his sister, Margaret; sisters-in-law, P.J. Sparks, Norma Fauquar, Gloria Harden, Raye Kirkmeyer, Rita Dabbs, and Mary Louise Dabbs; and many nieces and nephews. He kept a close relationship with his siblings, nieces and nephews through frequent trips and family reunions. They knew they could always count on "Uncle Carl". Carl, a devoted Christian and Deacon, was a member of First Baptist Church of Albuquerque. Carl and Robbie showed compassionate Christian service by helping widows, doing yard work for others, making weekly visits to the sick and home bound, and those in nursing homes. They provided transportation to church for many seniors who could no longer drive. Carl taught a children's Sunday school class for many years at FBC and faithfully attended midweek prayer meetings and Bible study. He was honored for some 25 years of volunteer service to the homeless at Noon Day ministry. Carl enjoyed fishing and played weekly golf for over 20 years with Art Wood, Bob Boyd, Tommy Ferguson and Travis Ferguson. He and Robbie enjoyed travelling around the US and the world. They spent many summers at the Colorado cabin of special friends John and Jean Hawk. Carl was also active with the Telephone Pioneers, Shriners and Elks Club.
