EDLA MARIE "DUTCHY" May 23, 1923 to December 1, 2011 Edla was born and raised in Belen, New Mexico, the daughter of Carl and Hilda Halama. Preceding her death were her brothers, Norbert and Lars, and her husband, Howard Garling. Dutchy grew up with her dearest, life-long friends Rosemary, Annelies, Jean and Margaret. She was editor of the Belen High School newspaper and wrote articles for the local news. She attended Cal State Fullerton in California in 1941. Because of the start of World War II, Edla returned to the Duke City to attend the University of New Mexico. She graduated in 1945. Edla was an active member in Alpha Delta Pi sorority and a life-long supporter of the Lobos. Edla married Howard in 1952 and raised their sons Tim and Karl in Albuquerque. Edla was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a dedicated volunteer at the UNM Rehabilitation Center. Dutchy was involved with her husband in establishing Western State Bank in 1971. As a couple, Edla and Howard loved traveling to Europe, Hawaii and the Bahamas. They especially enjoyed the time spent at the family cabin at El Valle Escondido near Taos, New Mexico. Edla enjoyed swimming, tennis and playing many rounds of golf at Four Hills Country Club. She spent countless hours playing her baby grand piano. Her favorite piece was Beethoven's For Elise. She resided in Albuquerque until 2008, moving to Arvada, Colorado, to be close to her oldest son Tim. He and his wife Sandy and their sons Jason, Kyle and Andrew provided many hours of love and attention. Her youngest son Karl and wife Cindy of Farmington, New Mexico truly loved Edla. They advised her on many important business decisions and were always supportive in many ways. Their daughters Kayla and Cassidy and husband Matthew Holguin and their daughter Olivia (Edla's great grand-daughter), all residing in Las Cruces, will forever miss "Grandma Honey". A Memorial Service will be held in Albuquerque on a day in late spring or early summer of 2012.
