Obituary for MARTIN

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday December 04, 2011

RANDALL WAYNE MAJOR USAF, RETIRED Age 56, of Albuquerque, NM, died Monday November 28, 2011 after a courageous fight with Multiple Sclerosis. He was born April 26, 1955 in Laramie, WY to Roy and Carol Martin and grew up in Cheyenne. His father inspired him to earn his Eagle Scout Award. He graduated from East High in 1973 and from the University of Wyoming in 1978. After graduation, he joined the Air Force in which he served proudly for 16 years. Randy married his high school sweetheart, Kay Vondy, on June 20, 1976. During their tours of duty in CA, ND, and ID, Randy and Kay had three children, Jennifer, Janelle, and Jason. In 1984, the Air Force brought them to NM where they made friends that they treasured dearly. He was deeply committed to his family, immediate and extended. In the last 12 years he was proud to be a Grandpa to his three grandchildren. During his Air Force career, Major Martin served as a Navigator and Electronic Warfare Officer on the B-52, and an Analytical Scientist for the IFFN and AFOTEC programs, EF-111, F-117, B-2, and F-22 airplanes. During Operation Desert Storm, he "flew" proudly from his computer desk. He retired from the Air Force in 1995 with the rank of Major and continued to be dedicated to God and Country throughout his life. He was a member at St. John's Methodist and later a charter member at Sandia Presbyterian. He was a choir member, deacon, videographer, and a friend. He helped organize Boy Scout Troop 1 and enjoyed many Bible study groups at SPC. He was a visionary, always looking for a way to improve things. He also volunteered at the VA fixing computers. He and Kay enjoyed traveling the country to visit their extended family and friends. The most remarkable thing about Randy was that despite living with MS for 26 years, every day he chose to have a positive attitude. He relied on his faith in God and his own philosophy that "life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it." He will be remembered by his caring heart, gentle spirit, and his contagious smile. Major Randall Martin is survived by his wife of 35 years, Kay; children, Jennifer and husband David, Janelle and husband Jordan, Jason and wife Staci; grandchildren, Brandon, Tyler and Katelyn; his mother, Carol; brothers, Rich and wife Jenny, David, Steve and wife Chris; sister, Karen and husband Frank; nieces, nephews and many other relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, Roy. Interment will take place Monday, December 5, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National MS Society at www.nationalmssociety.org. or the Boy Scouts of America.
