Obituary for PORTER

LYLE K. Long-time resident of Albuquerque, Lyle K. Porter passed away on September 9, 2011. He was 86 years old. Lyle was born in Morgan, UT on to Warren and Bertha Cook Porter. The Porters had a large family of eight boys and two girls. The family moved to Panguitch, UT when Lyle was about ten years old. After high school and the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Lyle enlisted in the Navy and served at the Naval Training Station in San Diego. After the war, he moved to Ogden, UT where he fell in love with Wilma Holmes, whom he married on June 21, 1951. The couple moved to Albuquerque where Lyle worked for 37 years as a scientist for Sandia National Laboratories. He loved his work which focused on rockets, sensors, and satellites. He traveled world-wide with Sandia and in the course of his career moved his family to Washington DC, Boston, and Germany. Lyle was a very involved member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as President of the Albuquerque East Stake and three times as a Regional Representative to the Council of Twelve Apostles. Lyle and Wilma served a mission together for the church at Temple Square in Salt Lake City, UT where they escorted visitors through the temple grounds. Later they co-authored a history of the LDS church in New Mexico. Lyle is survived by five children: Bruce Porter and wife, Susan of Bountiful, UT, Rebecca Rogers and husband, Gary of Longwood, FL, Pamela Hamblin and husband, Randy of Albuquerque, Carolyn Brustad and husband, Roger of Gaithersburg, MD, and Susan Grenfell and husband, Darrin, of Versailles, KY. He is also survived by an older brother, Harvey Porter of Morgan, UT and younger brother, Paul Porter of Bountiful, UT. His posterity includes 22 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Lyle will be held Saturday, September 24, 2011, at the Indian School Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 12701 Indian School Rd., NE, Bishop Derek Lines officiating. A viewing will be held that morning from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., with the funeral to follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE.
