Obituary for MILLER

ESTHER MARIA 88, passed away August 11, 2011 of natural causes. Esther is survived by her husband, Albert; children, Maria McNeill and Richard Miller; grandchildren, Amanda and Diana McNeill. She was preceded in death by her sister, Emma; brother, Francisco Junior. Esther was born in New York City on August 17, 1922, to Francisco and Maria Bonilla. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Spanish from Hunter College in New York City and years later returned to school to earn a Master's degree in Elementary Education from Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY. She had a lifelong passion for learning and education, and among many other accomplishments and skills was fluent in four other languages beyond her native English and Spanish. Over the course of her life Esther worked as a civilian translator and cryptanalyst for the War Department during World War II; a librarian for the New York City Public Library; an elementary school teacher at St. Thomas the Apostle School in West Hempstead, NY; and again (after an initial period of retirement) as a librarian for the Esther Bone Memorial Library in Rio Rancho, NM. In Rio Rancho she also worked actively as a volunteer in the St. Joseph's West Mesa Hospital Emergency Room. In 2000 health issues finally forced her to permanently retire. In 1958 Esther married Albert Miller, and the following year gave birth to twins Maria and Richard. The family lived in New York City until 1965, when they moved to Hempstead, NY. After retiring in 1984 the couple moved to Rio Rancho, NM, where they resided until the time of her death. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at Daniels Family Funeral Services, Sara Road Chapel, 4310 Sara Road SE and Meadowlark Lane, Rio Rancho, NM. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at the Church of the Incarnation, 2309 Monterrey Road NE, Rio Rancho, NM. The Rite of Christian Burial will be held at Vista Verde Memorial Park, 4310 Sara Road Se and Meadowlark Lane, Rio Rancho, NM immediately following the Mass.
