Teresa T. Sype, age 55, passed away at her home in Albuquerque on Friday, April 15, 2011, following a valiant 8 1/2 year battle with breast cancer. Born on August 2, 1955, in Akron, Iowa, to Dwayne (d) and Margrit Erks, Teresa graduated from high school in El Paso, TX. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1983, where she was elected to the Alpha Chi National Honor Scholorship Society and the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. She was awarded a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in 1985, and a Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering from the University of New Mexico in 2001. She was a member of Pi Tau Sigma, the National Honorary Mechanical Engineering Fraternity, and in 1995 was elected to the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society. In 1984 she was a recipient of an Outstanding Young Women of America award. Following 23 years of service, Teresa retired from Sandia National Laboratories in 2007. Active in the community, Teresa was an American Red Cross Disaster Services Volunteer, a FossilWorks volunteer with the New Mexico Museum of Natural History, and a supporter of New Mexico Friends of Animals. :A lover of cats - and animals in general - Teresa leaves behind cats, Rowdy, Boo, Jane, Jack, and Mattie and dog, Goldie." "An award-winning cross-stitch artist, Teresa has blessed family and friends with many of her creations." Teresa loved travel, participating in an archeological dig in Israel, and visiting France, Germany, and Ireland, from all of which she collected cross-stitch patterns. From 1998 to 2001 she spent three months a year in Russia as a monitor of Russian nuclear facilities, and was in fact, in Russia on September 11, 2001. From these assignments she brought back many original art works, which she prized. She is survived by her mother, Margrit Erks of Rio Rancho; husband, Russ; son, Peter (Cheryl); daughter, Faith; sister, Brenda Williams (Dan); niece, Rachel Williams; niece and God-daughter, Alyssa Williams; and nephew, Eric Williams, all of Albuquerque. A Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2011, 4:00 p.m., at St. Timothy's Lutheran Church.
