Obituary for BESS

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday April 17, 2011

Barbara P. Bess was born July 29, 1919 in Minneapolis, MN the second child of Clifford and Mabel Pollock. Barbara died Monday, April 11, 2011. Her children, Bob, Jim, Chris, and Sandra; seven grandchildren, Joanne, Brad, Hillery, Christopher, Katy, Jesse and Tyler; and ten great- grandchildren survive her. Her husband, Earnest, preceded her in death. Because her father loved the west he encouraged both Barbara and her sister, Sue, to attend UNM which they both did. While at UNM in addition to her studies she became a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She continued to offer her talents as an alum in later years. While at UNM she met Earnest and they married in the middle of her junior year which interrupted her college career. Barbara and Earnest worked and played for the first three years of their marriage. Then the first of their four children was born. Barbara was an attentive and joyful full time mother as she raised her children. She continued to support each one right up to the last days of her life. Barbara loved to express the beauty of New Mexico through her watercolors, oils, and other art projects. Her creativity and love of New Mexico was always noticeable in her home. In the mid 70's she re-entered UNM where she completed her studies and received her college degree. She was particularly proud of this achievement, as was her family. Barbara was a lifetime member of the Episcopal Church. She and her family attended the Cathedral of St. John regularly for over 40 years. She served in numerous leadership positions while at St. John's. In recent years she and her husband attended St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. The family wishes to thank the many people who cared for Barbara and supported the family, over the past few years, especially Faye Janzad of High Pointe Care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Barbara's name to St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 601 Montano NW, Albuquerque, NM 87107. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held at a later date with interment to follow. Final arrangements have been entrusted to Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th St. NW. 505-343-8008.
