Arthur C. Stone, Jr, known to friends as "Stoney", died Sunday March 20, 2011 at age 94. Arthur was born in Dexter, NM in 1916, and lived on the family farm with his nine siblings. All his life he enjoyed the beauty of nature, hunting and fishing, and all types of sports activities. He had a green thumb and could grow anything in his garden. He attended New Mexico Normal University (now NM Highlands) on a basketball scholarship and was a starter in every game for four years. Upon college graduation, he entered the Army Air Corps as a flying cadet and soon after married his high school sweetheart, Wanda Jean Preston. They had two children and a loving marriage until her death in 2005. Wanda and Stoney enjoyed his 29-year career in the United States Air Force which included much travel and various assignments; he retired as a full Colonel in 1969 and came to live in Albuquerque. In retirement, he loved gardening, conversations with friends, and kept fit with walking several miles each day up until his death. He was dearly loved by family and friends and will not soon be forgotten. He is survived by two children: Donna Haggerty and husband, Robert of Albuquerque, and Stuart Stone and wife, Barbara of Santa Rosa, California; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Fred Stone, Lloyd Stone, and Clyde Stone all of Roswell, New Mexico. Cremation has taken place and a private family burial will be held in Roswell at a later date.
