Mary Lou McCallum Heaphy. The sparkling and ever charming Mary Lou McCallum Heaphy, 83, an 80-year resident of Albuquerque, passed away early on Saturday morning, March 26, 2011 after a short battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Bernard Heaphy and son, Clifford John Heaphy. She was the beloved mother of Robert (and wife Kay), James (and wife Roberta), Thomas, Maryanne, and Kathy. She delighted in her grandchildren, Kaitlin, Andrew, and Chantele, and many nieces and nephews. Informally she counted among her cherished extended family: Tony Mattson and Pat Haber, Greg Baczek, Randall Maydew, and Jenan Gonzales. Mary Lou was a local author and public speaker. She had several articles published in magazines, including in the New Mexico Magazine. But she was most proud of her book, "A Cliffie Experience, Tales of New Mexico from 1902-1940," about her adopted mother, Clifford Myrick McCallum. Mary Lou was also an active alumna of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority for 63 years, including as President, and was involved in numerous organizations, including her beloved Chapter V of P.E.O, for which she served as President. She was a graduate of Albuquerque High School and has remained active with AHS alumni. She recently organized the 65th class reunion held in September 2010. Mary Lou graduated from UNM, receiving a Bachelor of Arts and Masters degrees. She was a proud alumna of the University, and in 1988 she received UNM's "Alumni Meritorious Service Award." Mary Lou enjoyed giving classes and workshops at TVI/CNM on Early Albuquerque and was a favorite and popular speaker for Albuquerque's OASIS Institute. "Our sadness is too deep for tears." But our hearts are full and we, her family, are so deeply proud of her and her many accomplishments, and we will forever be in awe of the irrepressible and irreplaceable Mary Lou. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 from 4:00 7:00 p.m., at French - University. The Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, March 31, 2011, 10:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 4020 Lomas Blvd. NE. A private burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
