Obituary for POWELL

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday March 11, 2011

Henry Vernon Powell, better known to his friends as Buster, passed away at his home on Sunday, March 6, 2011, at the age of 77. A resident of Albuquerque for more than 50 years, Buster was born on February 16, 1934, in Hamlin, West Virginia, to Frank and Ruby Powell as the oldest of seven children. After graduating from high school, he moved to Rockford, Illinois, where he met June (Dach), whom he married on 5/5/55, nearly 56 years ago. He and his wife moved to Albuquerque with their children in 1959; he began working as an electronics technician for ACF, which later became General Electric. He retired from GE in 1994. After retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling across the United States as well as spending time at their mountain retreat near Cuba, New Mexico. An avid outdoorsman, Buster loved to go hunting, fishing, and four-wheeling; in addition, he savored the peacefulness of watching hummingbirds swarm around his homemade feeders. He is survived by his wife, June (Albuquerque), daughters Carol Winn and her husband Tim (Amarillo, TX) and Merrilou Long and her husband Ken (Albuquerque), sons Jim (Brentwood, CA) and Bruce and his wife Shary (Albuquerque), as well as six grandchildren: Alexander and Jonathan Winn (Amarillo), Shawna and Ashley Powell (Albuquerque), and Jackson and Christopher Powell (Brentwood). Surviving siblings include Barbara Lindsey (Albuquerque), Darrell Powell (Laurelville, OH), and Lila Cooper (Los Lunas). Visitation will be held at French's Mortuary at 1111 University Boulevard N.E. (843-6333) on Thursday, March 10, from 3:00-8:00 p.m. His remains will be cremated, and a memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, at Christ Lutheran Church, 7701 Candelaria Road N.E. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Busters memory be sent to the American Cancer Society, New Mexico Region, 5800 Lomas Blvd., NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110 or online at http://www.cancer.org.
