Obituary for GALLEGOS

Ernestina Gallegos, 89, passed away peacefully on 1/31/11 surrounded by her family at Vista Care Center in Albuquerque, NM.. Ernestina was born on March 9, 1921 in Carrizo, NM (Gobernador) where her father, Lucas Martinez, homesteaded 570 acres which are still in the family. Ernestina was preceded in death by her husband, Belarmino; son, Robert; parents, Lucas Martinez and Josefa Trujillo Martinez; brother, Isaac Martinez; and sister, Alice Vicente. She is survived by her children: Lydia Arranaga (John), Ramon Gallegos (Leann), Alfonso, Olivia Gallegos (Reeader), Rita Jaramillo (Alonso), Lucas Gallegos (Shirley); 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Virginia Martinez, Rufina Lujan, and Bernie Ulibarri; She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Ernestina grew up in Los Ojos (Park View, NM) where she attended St. Joseph Catholic School. Ernestina met her future husband, Belarmino Gallegos, in Rosa, NM and they married on Feb. 24, 1945. They lived in Los Arboles, CO where their children were born and raised. Like many other families they were forced to relocate due to the building of the Navajo Reservoir in 1960 (moved to Ignacio, CO). Ernestina was first and foremost a mother and homemaker until her children grew up, at which time she went to work for the Southern Ute Tribe in 1966 where she worked in the kitchen and went on to work for Headstart, where she went on to earn her GED and completed several college level courses. She taught many young children, her favorite subjects all her life. After retiring there, she stayed home and was much sought after to care for children of local working parents. These went on to become very close to her and all called her grandma. She lived in Ignacio at the family home for ten years after Belarmino passed away. She then went to live in Albuquerque with her daughter, Lydia , for seven years until her death. Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at 7:00 p.m., at French Lomas Chapel. Rosary will be recited on Thursday, February 3, 2011 at 6:00 p.m., at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Ignacio, CO. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m., at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Interment will follow at San Pedro - Santa Rosa Cemetery in Arboles, CO.
