Obituary for SMITH

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday January 28, 2011

James Ray Smith Born September 15, 1919, James Ray Smith died on January 10, 2011 in Arlington Texas. A long-time resident of New Mexico, he was married for 35 years to Ruby whom he lost in 2001. He had three daughters from a previous marriage - Myrtle Ray and Roxie, who preceded him in death, and Sherry - and a step-daughter, Debbie. At the time of his death, he was living in Texas with his granddaughter Dee and her son. He was a member of the Church of Christ for many years and was closely associated with the church in Bosque Farms. He was a self-described "elevator man" who worked in that trade all of his adult working life. He was a member of the "Greatest Generation" and served during World War II. But more important than the facts of his life, he was a man with a good heart who tried to help family and friends whenever he could. He was a loving and caring husband who believed in hard work - he always did his best, regardless of the job. He loved to drive and he loved to talk. While living in Texas, he would suddenly decide to visit New Mexico and drive straight thru - he said it was calming to him to be behind the wheel. And he had lots of stories and more than a few opinions on nearly any subject in which he had an interest - and he had a lot of interests. He didn't claim to be perfect but he did try to do the right thing and, much more often than not, succeeded. He will be buried with his beloved Ruby in a private service at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
