Teresa Ann Ashley, born Teresa Ann Pewitt, passed away Sunday, January 16, 2011 at 6:00 a.m. Terri, as her friends and family knew her, was born in Illinois on February 5, 1947. She grew up in Haddon Heights, New Jersey. Terri moved out to New Mexico to attend college, where she graduated from the University of New Mexico with her BA in Elementary Education. In 1974, she began her more than 30-year long teaching career in Gallup, New Mexico, with her longest position at Roosevelt Elementary School. In 2001, Terri moved to Albuquerque to be closer to her daughter and granddaughter, where she continued to teach until the end of last school year. Terri loved her students, animals, gardening, dancing, Science Fiction, laughing, and spending time with her daughter and granddaughters. Terri was preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn Burns; her father, Bion Pewitt; and her nephew, Brady McClain. She is survived by her daughter, Renee Ashley; her two granddaughters, Alyssa Luna and Hanora Ashley; and her brother Dennis McClain. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1100 E. Mesa, Gallup, New Mexico on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in Terri's name to the ASPCA.
