Ray B. Powell, 90, a resident of New Mexico since 1943, passed away December 16, 2010, in Albuquerque, NM. Born in Buffalo, NY, he came to New Mexico as part of the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, NM. He helped initiate the founding of Sandia National Laboratories, where he served as Executive Vice President until his retirement in 1985. Mr. Powell was the Democratic candidate for Governor of New Mexico in 1985, and served as the Democratic Party Chairman from 1985 to 1998. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Spencer Powell; his children, Thomas Schneider, Pamela Powell and Ray Powell, DVM. Memorial services are pending for a later date and will be announced.
