Obituary for WEST

CLARENCE R. "WOODY" WEST, 91, a resident of Los Alamos, passed away on Saturday, November 13, 2010. Woody was born in Baird, Texas on August 6, 1919 to Clarence B. and Ada Eyley West. He was preceded in death by his parents; half-brother, Edwards E. Thomas and sister, Vivian Warren. He graduated from the University of Texas/Austin in 1943. After graduation, Woody worked at B.F. Goodrich and Ozark Ordinance before coming to Los Alamos in 1946. He retired in 1980 after 34 years of service with the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Woody enjoyed the out-of-doors in many ways. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, birdwatcher and golfer. He learned to ski in Los Alamos and served on the Ski Patrol for several years. Woody was a charter member of the Sangre de Cristo Audubon Society and state president of the New Mexico Audubon Council. Woody had a gift for telling a good story. He entertained many people through his involvement with Dale Carnegie and the Los Alamos Toastmasters. He also pleased the crowd at the State Fair when demonstrating his skills with the Southwestern Artisan Blacksmith Association. Mr. West is survived by his wife of 58 years, Beula (Bo) West, daughter, Nancy Manierre and husband George of Corrales and granddaughters, Caroline and Johanna Manierre. Cremation is being planned. Graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos with Father Collin Kelly officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Randall Davey Audubon Center or Friends of Bandelier.
