Obituary for WERLING

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday October 31, 2010

Brian Werling, 45, born May 23, 1965 and passed away October 28, 2010. Brian was born in Passaic, New Jersey and spent most of his adult life in Albuquerque. Brian spent numerous years in sales and marketing with companies as diverse as Merrill Lynch and Vaughn Wedeen Creative, working to allow his wife Heidi to achieve her goal of becoming a teacher. Following Heidi's graduation, Brian was able to pursue his true passion for food. Brian attended the culinary arts program at Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) and then won a full scholarship to the New England Culinary Institute (NECI). He graduated in June 2009 with B.A. in Hospitality and Restaurant Management. He felt fortunate to work with gifted and passionate instructors at both institutions. He gave these teachers credit for his success. Brian loved road food and fine dining, Montreal and Las Vegas, Bruce Springsteen and Aaron Copland, the Dallas Cowboys and well, just the Cowboys. He loved the Fiery Food Show and the Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta, dogs and hawks, sea otters, and capybaras. He loved to laugh, and he loved making others laugh. He loved his friends: His food friends, his school friends, his work friends, and his walking by the river friends. Brian most especially loved his family. He inherited his sophisticated taste from his grandparents Iris and John Weigele. He learned to love and care for animals from his beautiful mother Toni Frei. He passed on his love of football to his son Hiatt, who has more sense than to root for the Cowboys. And he shared 22 years of devotion with his wife, Heidi. A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 1st, 2010 at the First Unitarian Church (3701 Carlisle NE). In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society or New Mexico Greyhound Connection, where Heidi and Brian found their beloved Sparky.
