Bernave Gutierrez, Sr., an Albuquerque resident since 1966, passed away in the loving arms of his family at home on Tuesday, October 5, 2010. Bernard was born August 2, 1927 in Tucumcari, NM. He served his country from 1943-1946 with the US Navy on the USS Minneapolis CA36 Heavy Cruiser as a Seaman First Class at the age of 15. He was married to Freda for 51 years, she preceded him in death in 1999. He is survived by his eight children, Steve and wife Diane, Charlie and wife Susan, Bernard Jr. and wife Terri, Bernadette and husband Juan Trujillo, David and wife Vickie, Brenda, Carol, and Joshua and wife Charlene; He also has nine grandchildren, Victor, Stephanie, Toby, Bobby, John, Mary, Brandon, Amber and Brett; ten great-grandchildren, Alicia, Parker, Savanna, Marisa, Skylyn, Zimirie, Christian, Francisco, Corrina and Deliah; His fifth generation great-great-granddaughter was born on father's day 2010, Courtney Lea. He had brothers, sisters, in-laws and many life long friends. Bernave began his newspaper career at the age of 8 with the Tucumcari Daily News. He worked for the Gallup Independent, Las Vegas Daily Optic and retired after 26 years with the Albuquerque Journal. He retired in the early 1990's to care for his wife Freda. He raised and cared for all his children up until the day he passed. The family would like to thank the VA Hospital and Zia Hospice for all the care and compassion they gave to Bernave. Rosary will be recited Thursday, October 7, 2010, 7:00 p.m., at French Lomas Chapel. Mass will be Friday, October 8, 2010, 10:00 a.m., at Our Lady of the Assumption, Tennessee at Lomas.
