Donald Frank Sterner was born on December 29, 1924 in Boise, Idaho. He joined the Air Force at age 17, was trained as a pilot, stationed in England during WWII and captained a B17 Bomber on many sorties over enemy territory. Don took his last flight the night of September 17, 2010 passing away peacefully in his sleep. He leaves behind Mary Camilla (Terry), his wife and companion of 28 years; Also left to remember him are his children and loved ones, Nancy (Peter) Barnes-Smith of Las Cruces, Victor (Alesia) Sterner of Pingree, Idaho, Terry Ann Dettweiler of Albuquerque, Jack (Terri) Dettweiler of Albuquerque, Rick (Lisa) Dettweiler of Dallas, TX; his beautiful grandchildren, Lori, Elizabeth, Eva, Brittany, Nathaniel, Slaton; and great-grandchild Taylor. He joined Los Alamos Laboratory in 1963 and worked there for the next 40+ years. Don was a bigger than life kind of man with a ready smile, a kind word and a generosity that knew no bounds. There are many who will remember the twinkle in his eye and great spirit. Don loved God and believed in Heaven. We hope there are good cigars there and that he can smoke indoors.
